Waddesdon Church of England School > We Need To Talk About Racism

"To Educate, Inform, Support and be an Ally for all regardless of race, ethnicity, background or environment."

WNTR Vision Statement

What is the Aim of WNTR?

Educate

Educate each other, both student and staff in understanding and celebrating our differences, inclusive of race, ethnicity, culture, religion, background, or environment.

Inform

Create a learning environment where shared experiences are listened to, enabling a greater understanding on the topic of race, ethnicity, equality and inclusivity

Support

Provide support to the Waddesdon school community in managing issues of race and ethnicity; utilising appropriate resources & tools for both staff and students alike.

Allyship

Engage and empower the Waddesdon community to be an ‘Ally’ equality and inclusivity regardless of individual background, simply because, it is the ‘right thing to do’ in showing we care

Recently our students have been working with Miss Raqib to:

  • Ensure Waddfest is a community event, raising money for charity and raising awareness of the diversity of our community
  • Educate students on issues such as the n word and colourism through form time and assembly resources
  • Ensure diversity week is celebrated in the school through assemblies, CP lessons and heritage dress day
  • Raise awareness of celebrations and education across the year eg Windrush day, Black celebration month

Race & Conscious Equality Charter Mark

Over the past few years we have been working towards ensuring that our minority students and staff have a greater sense of belonging within our Waddesdon community. This work involved educating our entire school community on the beauty of diversity as well as tackling the unspoken discriminations, though various celebrations, posters, information lessons and assemblies.

We continued our work through educating the local community via a regular positive presence at Waddfest, celebrating through food and music. During our first WaddEd Educational conference we showcased how we have tackled systemic discrimination, both overtly and covertly, sharing our knowledge with other schools.

To ensure that these changes were sustainable we applied for the Race & Conscious Equality Charter Award and were initially awarded a Silver Award. Our continued work has meant that when our updated action plan was resubmitted in September 2024 we were awarded the highest award – Gold – for the continued work we do for our students, staff, local and wider community.

Within school, we engage with these questions as students, teachers and school leaders. We provide educational opportunities for Governors, Staff and our young people so that they can better understand how to contribute positively to a better and more equitable world.
