Business Studies

Subject Overview

The Business, Economics and Finance Department offers a range of very popular courses from Key Stage 4 to Key Stage 5 that are enjoyed by students intending to pursue courses and careers in related subjects, as well as those wishing to develop a wider understanding of issues that will affect them over the course of their lives.

GCSE Business is available as an option in Year 9; from Year 12, qualifications are available in Business, Economics and Finance.

Teaching Aims and Objectives

The study of Business, Economics and Finance is intended to encourage students to develop their interest and enthusiasm for learning about businesses, enterprise, personal finance and the economy. Students acquire a range of knowledge in their chosen field as well as transferable skills including presenting arguments, decision-making, problem-solving, applied numeracy, the challenging of assumptions and critical analysis.

Although the subjects are centred on recent and current real-life events, the courses are academic in their nature and assessed entirely through examination.  These often involve case studies and essay-based discussion and recommendation based upon calculations and interpretation of data. Consequently, strong literacy and numeracy skills are fundamental to the study of Business, Economics and Finance, as well as being further developed through the study of these subjects.
